About Kurt | perspective and background
Connecting people is a passion of mine, and always has been.
A public interest attorney by day and professional wedding officiant on the side, I bring to this work a broad background as a former Jesuit priest who served over the years as an educator, spiritual guide, and hospital and prison chaplain. And I have had the true privilege to marry couples in Baltimore and Boston, Philadelphia and New York, and from places as uniquely beautiful as Northern California, Medellín Colombia, and Southern France. You can see couples I've married and read their reviews of my work with them here.
Now married myself, and with personal and professional ties that span distances, cultures, and outlooks, I bring to the service of planning and officiating at custom wedding ceremonies a commitment to meeting each couple “where they are.” So whether you desire a simple elopement-style wedding, a carefully customized secular ceremony, or a signature event composed of personally meaningful cultural, spiritual, or religious traditions, I will work with you to craft a ceremony that reflects who you are and celebrates the married couple you hope to be.
Harborlight Weddings | what inspired the name?
In founding an independent wedding officiant service in August 2018, rather than name it after myself I chose Harborlight. The name reflects both my own wedding experience, and what I believe weddings ultimately are about - beauty, reflection, joy, and fun!
Leading up to our July 2017 wedding, my now-husband and I considered several venues before reaching what turned out to be one of our best planning decisions: we got married on a boat! Our #BOATWEDDING! from Manhattan's Chelsea Piers to a glistening New York Harbor, around the Statue of Liberty, and beneath the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges was the most joyous day of my life, filled with bright midsummer light. So when it came time to name this enterprise, Harborlight fit just right.
I also believe the Harborlight name speaks to what the best weddings should be. Harbors are gathering places brought alive by good food, lively music, companionship and celebration. Harbors also reflect a dynamic sunrise-to-sunset light that helps us connect to all that is good and true and beautiful in life. And at the end of the day, that's what a good wedding should do!
So whether you ultimately choose a setting on land or by sea, indoors or outdoors, funky or traditional, or somewhere in between, these characteristics - the good, and the true, and the beautiful - are what I'm committed to helping you realize for your own custom wedding ceremony.
